FREE Insect Week topical pack for schools!

Insect Week takes place at the end of June each year and this year is celebrated between 22nd and 28th June. Run by the Royal Entomological Society, it encourages everyone to ‘Stand Tall for the Small’ by protecting the insect life around us.

Learning about insects supports both the Development Matters EYFS curriculum and the National Curriculum’s Science learning objectives, making Insect Week a great opportunity for cross-curricular learning.
To help you explore insects with your pupils, we’ve created a free topical pack full of printable classroom activities. It includes:
• A fact sheet about Insect Week and insects themselves
• A worksheet to help your pupils sort out insects from other creepy crawlies
• A worksheet focusing on the parts of an insect
• A variety of colouring-in sheets
• Worksheets to help your pupils design and describe their own imaginary insect

Identifying minibeasts
First up is ‘Minibeast identification’, a fun activity that helps children spot the differences between insects and other creepy crawlies while developing observation and classification skills.

Parts of an insect

So what makes a minibeast an insect?
Insects have six legs and either one or two pairs of wings. This activity helps children identify the different parts of an insect while learning about a common species, be that a butterfly, grasshopper, ant, dragonfly or beetle!
Please note: There is a more advanced version of this activity for Year 2 and above.
Insect or not?
Once pupils understand what makes an insect an insect, challenge them to classify different minibeasts correctly.

Make or create your own
Studying insects doesn’t have to focus entirely on the science. These activities also encourage creativity, descriptive writing and imaginative thinking.

Feeling arty? They can build their own creature in ‘Make a minibeast’.
Looking for a literacy link? ‘Create a minibeast’ lets children design and describe their own imaginary insect.?

We hope this selection of activities, along with the free topical pack, helps your pupils discover just how fascinating insects can be during Insect Week and beyond.
