Maths Week Scotland returns on 22nd September and this year has the theme of ‘Wild Maths’. With almost 400 games and activities linked to the Scottish maths curriculum, it’s something we’re delighted to support.

In this blog, we highlight three of our engaging activities, along with one of our teacher tools, which will support you when celebrating maths in nature.

Natural symmetry in Early Years and First Level

‘Flowers’ is a maths activity that explores symmetry.

Pupils choose one of the four flower templates to decorate using a whole range of colours, textures and stamps.

Want to extend the activity and make it wilder? Print out the Busy Things’ template and ask the children to create a symmetrical flower head using natural materials you can find in the playground or park, like sticks and leaves.

Shapes in Early Years and First Level

‘Slime time’ is a game based around 2-D shapes.

Pupils must find the shapes (top left of the screenshot) in the main grid and make the snail follow his sweets to trace around it.

Counting in Early Years, First and Second Level

‘Hungry chicks’ is a maths game focused on counting.

Pupils must help the chicken feed the chicks by collecting the right number of worms and moving up the clouds, avoiding the birds and the monster!

Graphs in First Level

Whether you want to plot rainfall per day, the number of travelling days in a particular bird’s migration journey or the distance animals travel, a graph is always useful.

Busy Things’ Busy graph maker is particularly so, because it allows you to enter your data and show it in a multitude of ways.

There are different chart types, views and graphics, to help you create unique, stand-out visuals.
