Free Reading for Pleasure topical pack for schools

To coincide with the start of the National Year of Reading, the government-backed initiative delivered by the National Literacy Trust, we’re delighted to share our Reading for Pleasure topical pack for schools.
What’s in the pack?
The pack includes a wide range of resources for teachers and activities for children, which are all designed for Early Years, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 settings (and their equivalents in other countries). Its focus is on fun and making reading an appealing activity that children choose to do themselves, and the resources are intended to slot into your existing plans without adding significantly to either your preparation time or workload.
The pack includes:
- A fact sheet about reading for pleasure and the National Year of Reading
- Book recommendations linked to children’s interests
- A book genres matching activity
- Reading-based lesson plans (for EYFS, KS1 and KS2)
- Book and character summaries
- A handy bookmark template
Not a subscriber and want to see more?
The pack, along with this blog, include several free-to-play activities, which relate to reading. If you’d like to explore more and see what we offer across the full curriculum, you’re welcome to take one of our free trials. This will give you 28 days’ access and allow you to see how it might benefit your class.
Fancy a sneak peek?
The book recommendations and lesson plans, presented in the pack, include several books that we feature or have extracts from on Busy Things. Below are a couple of these, which show the flexible, discussion-friendly reading experiences we offer to support reading for pleasure:
The Three Little Pigs story is one of our series of traditional tales. It sees the story told by Busy Things’ very own Dog and Cat and is ideal to use on an interactive whiteboard at the front of the class.

Toys in Space is one of the nineteen book extracts on Busy Things.
It’s really user-friendly, allowing you to control the pace of the story and stop for discussions as and when needed.
It even includes a grammar tool, so children can see different elements of grammar in practice!
